Introducing Bertie Esq.
A recent photo of me looking as adorable as ever.
A] Personal Details
1] Your Name/s?
Bertie (aka Mr. B, Bertie squirt, Mr. Beazle, Munchkin Bunchkin, Pickle, Sausage, …)
2] Your 2 Leggeds Names?
Mummy & Daddy
3] What type of K9 are you? [Breed]
Possibly a cairn or cairn cross, very much a terrier.
4] How Old Are You?
I don’t know but I’m getting on a bit with aches and pains and going grey. Maybe 12.
5] Do you run your household?
Mummy is the disciplinarian and Daddy pretends he is when Mummy is around. I twist Daddy round my little paw claw 😆 Mummy understands my doggy language better than Daddy. I try and run it but Mummy wins really.
6] Do you live inside or outside the house?
Oh definitely inside.
7] Where about in the world do you live?
South West England
B] Exercise/Play Time/Adventuring
A few months after my adoption (2009)
8] How often do you take your 2 leggeds for a walk?
Two or three times a day. I prefer shorter walks these days.
9] Do you vary the walks or trek the same route every day?
Oh I like a bit of variety. I especially like going out in the car because that will probably mean Mummy and Daddy will end up at a café which means I get lots of treats. Actually if they sit down anywhere when we are walking I expect a treat.
10] Do your 2 leggeds allow you to talk to other K9’s on your walks or do they huff and puff behind you and urge you to hurry along?
Oh yes, they’re very kind like that.
11] Are you allowed to do ‘stuff’ on your walks freely?
I don’t like being given a bath so I only roll in these heavenly perfumes when it’s just too hard to resist. When I was young my recall was very bad so I had to stay on a retracting lead but now I’m older and wiser I have learnt to be more reliable and I am off the lead a lot.
12] Have your 2 leggeds ever embarrassed you? If so how?
Bound to have but my memory is going (sigh).
13] Do your 2 leggeds expect you to fetch the ball/toy every time during soft/hard play?
Nah, can’t be doing with that. But if a ball belongs to another K9er I’m off and only a special treat will get it back! I can rule the roost sometimes, ha!
* Do you have favourite toys and if so what are they?
I have a small rubber tyre and it’s my go to toy. I have lots of toys though.
14] Are you loved every day?
Made to feel special?
Absolutely! I’m so handsome why wouldn’t they want to? Honestly, that day I first saw Mummy looking at me through the wire at the rescue centre I knew she was my new two legged. We both knew. It took a few weeks after living with them to win Daddy over as he’d never had a pet.
15] Do your 2 leggeds take you away on holidays with them?
Yes, mostly. I cannot sleep in the car though so mummy doesn’t like me to travel for more than two hours. I have a doting adopted auntie in my village who adores me (of course) so I sometimes stay with her.
16] Do you get to pick where you go if they do?
I don’t need to because my two leggeds always consider what I would prefer.
17] Are you given treats? Too few or just right? What are your favourites?
There’s no such thing as too many treats! Mummy watches my weight though. I hear her tell Daddy that extra weight will make my arthritis worse. I think fishy bites are my favourite.
18] Are you fed a nutritional diet?
Yes, they love me. My previous owner use to give me something out of a two litre plastic bottle. Apparently I would be very expectant when I first went to live with Mummy and Daddy when such a bottle came out of that cold machine thing in the kitchen. Mummy was horrified.
19] Is your food moist or dry or both or even the raw meat diet?
I have dry food available and a little dish of dry food with water added available at all times. I don’t over eat and I’m good at self regulating my intake. I have a delicious small serving of wet food after the two leggeds have eaten their evening meal.
20] Do you enjoy it or is it boring?
I know what it’s like to go hungry so I don’t complain. I was stray before I was rescued.
21] Do you eat it every day, or sometimes refuse to?
Sometimes I don’t eat it because I’ve been given more treats than usual.
22] Are you allowed to sample your 2 leggeds food?
I try to. I give them that look, you know? I love it when Mummy is picking over a chicken carcass, getting it ready for the stock pot because she gives me yummy bits. She can be generous when she wants to be.
23] Do you eat your food when you are expected to, or when you wish to?
When I wish to. I go and tell mummy if my bowl is empty. I don’t like it being empty. Mummy or Daddy fills it for me and I’m happy. I don’t eat it immediately, I just need to know it’s there.
D] Your Personal K9 Stuff
24] Do you have a favourite piece of 2 legged clothing and if so, do they know?
I prefer my own smell. Mummy has been known to leave an old jacket with me in my younger days when I could get anxious.
25] Go on be a Devil – tell us what it is ….?
26] Do you deliberately play up at times, just to annoy or worry the 2 leggeds?
Do you mind ! I’m a good boy!
27] Do you have a bed?
Yes, one upstairs and one downstairs.
28] If so, do you sleep in your bed, or their bed, or the couch or all three and more?
Yep, I sleep everywhere. I’m too small to jump up on the beds though so I have to be lifted.
29] How much alone time or ‘just you’ time do you have?
If Mummy touches me and I don’t want it I do this sigh thing so that mummy knows I want alone time.
30] Do your 2 leggeds make you dress up?
* For which holiday or festivity is this applicable?
* Pose for pictures?
No! I do have a winter coat now that I’m older but I don’t count that.
31] Do you actually enjoy it or simply tolerate it because it appears to please them?
Don’t tolerate it. Full stop. If Mummy wants a picture she has to act very fast and catch me unawares. Her devicey thing is slow though so she seldom gets a good one. Haha!
32] Do you have a friendly vet?
I love going to visit John. They have cats wandering around that like teasing me.
33] What would be your perfect day?
I live in doggie heaven so most days are perfect.
In spite of everything … the manipulations and the training you must subject them to – are they happy that you are there to mentor for them?
Yes, Mummy says I’m her autism assistance dog and she couldn’t do without me. I’m not registered but that’s only a piece of paper, right? She is always thanking me for being me and for being such a great pack member.
Finally, in your own words tell us something about both you and your 2 leggeds that the questions haven’t touched on or asked about – something unique …
Two leggeds forget how to be children and play, especially my Mummy when she is suffering from depression and anxiety. Us dogs need to watch out for them as we are so good at this. Mummy loves how I read her mood and my attempts of helping her.
My two leggeds love that I am bold, cheeky, kind, forgiving and affectionate. They love how clever I am. They love how cute I am when I’m playing with my tyre with them and I growl like an old fashioned teddy bear.
Thank you very much Doodlepip for this pawpertunity.
With kindness, sniff and licks,
Me and Mummy, obviously, we look so alike… just look at that fur on her head!
My genuine thanks to Bertie for taking part in our K9 Questionnaire …… and let us not forget his Mummy and Daddy as well. It’s all about family.
Hope you enjoyed reading … Tootle Pip from Doodlepip!
